When spring (finally) arrives you may start thinking about your deck or patio area, or at least longing to entertain friends in the warmer weather. It is always worth the investment to enhance your outdoor space because it visually expands square footage living space of your home. For safety reasons ensure repairs are done first, check for raised nails, splintering, loose boards or rotting wood. Lighting is also an important factor to illuminate stairs, walkways and doorways (something we need to add to our space, the motion light isn’t cutting it!). Once the repairs are done, assess whether the deck needs to be re-stained or re-painted and allow the proper amount of days to complete the job (worth taking a few days off work, right?).
You can now concentrate on furniture and décor (my favorite)! Is some of your furniture starting to show rust stains? Don’t toss them yet, there are great products available to make them new again. For those projects, make sure you prepare the items properly and allow ventilation when spray painting (not in the back yard on a windy day).
Choose great decorative outdoor pillows and from that select a colour scheme to brighten up the space. It could be the colour of your seat cushions, outdoor rugs, lanterns, flower pots and candle holders. Add complimentary colours to add interest and style!
Search for patio lights to create ambient lighting for all those deck parties (I hope ours survived the long winter, I recommend taking lights down before winter). Freshen up the space with flowers, remember to water every day (they live longer that way).
Maybe you scored a great deal on patio furniture last fall, lucky you! If you missed the sales, try looking at flea markets or kijiji for key pieces that you can transform if not totally to your taste. Think of side tables, benches, vinyl wicker style seating or a replacement patio table…which is my dilemma.
Don’t think you need to have a large space in order to enjoy the outdoors. Bring colour, plants, comfort and style to your small space and be the envy of your neighbors.
Before you know it, you’ll have created a great space for relaxing or entertaining for the summer. If you decide it’s time to list your home, you’ll be ahead of the competition with your impressive outdoor paradise!
